Evaluate the contributions of L. Pasteur to modern microbiology [6 marks]
Pasteur provided supporting evidence for the fact that microbes originate from microbes, as well as demonstrating there were microbes in the air and heating above 70 degrees celsius killed most microbes (pasteurization). As a result he disproved the theory of spontaneous germination and provided evidence for the modern germ theory of disease.
- The virus is too small to be seen with a light microscope
- A virus is an obligate intracellular pathogen – since there are no animal cells in beef broth, Pasteur was unable to culture the pathogen and hence couldn’t observe it.
- Mention Koch’s postulates
